Meet our research team and partners

Maria is the Chief Investigator of the HENRY III Trial. Maria is a professor in Public Health Nutrition within the Health Sciences Department and Hull York Medical School at the University of York. She is a nutritionist with almost 20 years’ experience in the design and delivery of trials and related methodological research in the field of diet and obesity, with a special interest in early years and childhood. In addition to her academic role at the University of York, she is the Director of Nutrition Research for Born in Bradford, the lead for Diet and Obesity evaluation for a Better Start Bradford and the evaluation Chair of ‘ActEarly’, a MRC funded project aiming to promote a healthier, happier, and fairer future for children.

Michelle is an experienced Statistician and triallist with over 14 years’ experience of successful design, implementation and delivery of charity and NIHR funded clinical trials research. Michelle’s significant research experience extends to the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of large definitive phase III trials, in addition to cohort, observational, pilot and feasibility studies.

Philip Garnett is a Professor in Systems and Organisation. His research focuses on the application of systems theory, complex systems theory, and network analysis to understand organisations and how they operate.

Alicia O’Cathain is a Professor of Health Services Research based at the University of Sheffield. She is the Director of the Health and Care Research Unit which focuses on the development and evaluation of complex interventions and services in healthcare, social care and third sector organisations.
She has helped to develop interventions and evaluate them, leading the qualitative research and process evaluations.

The HENRY III Study
The HENRY Study is funded by the Public Health Research (PHR) Programme.


Adam is an Associate Professor in Health Economics, based at the University of Leeds. Adam has specific expertise in randomised controlled trials and is leading the economic evaluation for HENRY III.

Wendy is a public health nutritionist and Research Fellow within the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York. Wendy has experience in implementation research, with a focus on qualitative methods. She also has more than 8 years experience in delivering randomised control trials.
Dr Burton is the named lead for public involvement within HENRY III and will be supporting the systems process evaluation.
